This series is the result of photographs collaged and manipulated on screen, above which a pixalated layer has been added which both references the image below and serves to create a screen through which the image can be viewed. The half tone dot, which has been extensively modified to provide its own rythms, acts as a counterpoint to the colour image underneath. This duality is further endorsed by the decision to print the half tone dot either as relief or screenprint, onto the lithographic underprinting. By taking this image, which originated on screen, and resolving it through more traditional print processes, a surface physicality is created that would be in contrast to the more distant space of the image as a whole. The images continue the artists engagement with the still life genre, and increasingly with apparently informal grouping of objects, so creating narratives between these individual objects to suggest a sense of yearning and transformation. All the images in some way refernce a journey, from the preparation, the ironing board amongst the packing cases, to the more obvious images of the boat and the plane worked from models in the studio. The use of the modulated half tone dot is intended to create a distance between the image and the viewer while also referencing the nature of press photographs. Our recent past is filled with images of displacement, which have been largely been experienced through the media. suggesting these journeys where often there is no known destination but an imperative to escape. Each print in the series is intended to act both as a seperate image, while also functioning as part of the overall series.
